Taking it one step further once we are able to manipulate the material in space. Since space and time are interrelated if we could then move outside of the fabric of space-time and deep space travel will be achieved. A side effect of this will be time
travel. The mathematical equations are intense due to the variables. First
there is the earths rotation to compensate for, then the time of year or
the rotation of the earth on its axis, location around the sun, the solar systems rotation in our galaxy as well as
any gravitational influences from surrounding objects. Then of course the ever
expanding universe.
The planet has never been in the same position relative to the universe. One could actually calculate and plot its movement throughout its entire history and provide a map that shows it's movement through time. So if you wanted to travel back to a specific date in time you would have exact coordinates as to where the earth was in the universe at that time. Even further would be the ability to calculate where on the earth you wanted to pop back up.

Deep space travel:
If you could travel to different places on the earth, what's to stop you from traveling anywhere in the universe. You could pop up on another planet in a different solar system.
The calculations would have to be precise, because it would suck to emerge from space-time in the middle of the planet or worse, the sun. Perhaps it would be necessary to just travel to the general vicinity of where you are going then use a more conventional method of propulsion to navigate your way to your destination.
